ITS UK calls for open by default approach to data for Great British Railways
23 April 2025: Intelligent Transport Systems UK (ITS UK), the industry association for transport technology, has published its response to the Government consultation on the creation of Great British Railways (GBR), the new independent body being set up to run the UK’s rail network.
In its response, submitted last week, ITS UK has called for this new body to:
- Ensure an ‘open by default’ approach to rail data;
- Prioritise the collaborative rollout of smart ticketing by ensuring fare parity and by leveraging existing options from the private sector; and
- Ensure an environment where private sector innovation can flourish.
Commenting on the submission, Max Sugarman, Chief Executive of ITS UK, said: “Rail reform offers a great opportunity for the transport technology industry, but, critically, the new Great British Railways will need to work with the sector in delivering a more seamless, effective and cost-efficient rail network.
“In our submission, we set out three key recommendations for GBR: an open by default approach to data, supporting the continued roll out of smart ticketing, and working with the private sector to utilise their innovative products and services, to deliver greater benefits for passengers and freight. We look forward to working with the Government and Great British Railways as the organisation is established.”
