Intelligent Transport Systems UK (ITS UK), the representative body of the transport technology sector, has called on Parliament’s Transport Select Committee to look at the increasing use of data, in response to its ‘Our Future Transport’ call for inquiry ideas.

The submission highlights that, with more data available from the transport network than ever, there is increasing urgency for Government to set out the framework for its utilisation, across all transport modes and regions and nations of the UK.

Max Sugarman, Chief Executive of Intelligent Transport Systems UK (ITS UK), said: “Whether its from connected vehicles, smart ticketing, freight movements or apps, the UK transport network is producing more data than ever before. The use of this data offers opportunities to develop new transport services, support the public to make informed choices about how they travel, help transport authorities plan more effectively, support decarbonisation and improve safety on our transport system.

“Yet, much of this data remains unused. There is an important role for Government to bring organisations together and to set out frameworks that support the intelligent transport sector in making best use of this untapped resource. With the Transport Data Strategy overdue, its increasingly important that we get this right and that we grasp this opportunity to deliver more effective and efficient transport services, ultimately for the benefit of all who use them.
