Response to ‘A railway fit for Britain’s future’

In February 2025, the Government published A railway fit for Britain’s future seeking views on new policies to be included in a forthcoming Railways Bill, which will enable the establishment of Great British Railways (GBR) – a single directing mind that will run rail infrastructure and passenger services. More information about the consultation can be found here.

ITS UK has submitted a response to the consultation focusing on three technology-related recommendations:

  1. Ensure an ‘open by default’ approach by GBR to rail data.
  2. Prioritise the collaborative rollout of smart ticketing by ensuring fare parity and by leveraging existing options from the private sector. Consider a national barcode standard.
  3. Ensure an environment where private sector innovation can flourish.
