Response to ‘A railway fit for Britain’s future’
In February 2025, the Government published A railway fit for Britain’s future seeking views on new policies to be included in a forthcoming Railways Bill, which will enable the establishment of Great British Railways (GBR) – a single directing mind that will run rail infrastructure and passenger services. More information about the consultation can be found here.
ITS UK has submitted a response to the consultation focusing on three technology-related recommendations:
- Ensure an ‘open by default’ approach by GBR to rail data.
- Prioritise the collaborative rollout of smart ticketing by ensuring fare parity and by leveraging existing options from the private sector. Consider a national barcode standard.
- Ensure an environment where private sector innovation can flourish.
