Tees Valley Combined Authority select Yunex Traffic’s FUSION adaptive control solution

  • Tees Valley Combined Authority is set to deploy Yutraffic FUISON real-time adaptive control solution across its entire network.
  • FUSION ensures that optimised traffic management decisions and target outcomes are achieved for all road users, including public transport and active travel.
  • Road users across the combined authority will benefit from improved journey times, traffic flows, responses to incidents, and customer information.

Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA) has become the latest UK authority to select FUSION, Yunex Traffic’s innovative multimodal adaptive traffic control solution.  This network-wide roll out across the whole of TVCA will bring the very latest adaptive control technology to Middlesbrough, Darlington, Stockton-on-Tees, Hartlepool, Redcar and Cleveland.

Representing the next key stage in TVCA’s Digital Transport Strategy, FUSION will improve network efficiency and deliver a wide range of traffic management benefits across the region – including automated incident detection and alerts, improved bus service reliability, and reduced delays, congestion and emissions.

Andrea Reacroft, Digital Transport Programme Deliver Manager at Tees Valley Combined Authority, said, “Building on our investment in digital twin technology earlier this year with Yunex Traffic and Aimsun for our bus prioritisation solution within Tees Valley, we are pleased to announce the introduction of FUSION as the next generation adaptive control solution for traffic signal control.

“As part of our innovative Digital Transport Strategy, FUSION will see benefits across Tees Valley as seen from Transport for London as an early adopter of the solution.  Our aim is to improve journey times for all modes of transport, reducing congestion and improving air quality.”

Transforming traffic management in the Tees Valley

Sean Fryer, Digital Delivery Manager for Transport at Tees Valley Combined Authority, said: “I’m excited by the opportunity to deliver Yunex Traffic’s FUSION next generation adaptive control solution.  This advancement in our digital transport strategy will transform traffic management in the Tees Valley by enhancing traffic flow, reducing congestion, and improving journey times for all road users, including public transport and active travel.

“Building on our earlier digital twin investment, this initiative reflects our commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship.  We anticipate significant positive impacts and a more connected, robust, and resilient transport network.  This partnership highlights TVCA’s dedication to state-of-the-art solutions that improve resident quality of life and support sustainability goals.”

Outcomes for all road users are policy driven

Using a range of modern data sources, FUSION continuously monitors traffic and develops accurate indicators of congestion and traffic disruption, ensuring traffic management decisions and target outcomes for all road users are policy driven.  So, for example, traffic signal timings can be optimised more efficiently to ensure active travel modes and cleaner air outcomes are prioritised.

Wilke Reints, Managing Director of Yunex Traffic in the UK, said: “As our latest client and the first combined authority to select FUSION, TVCA has chosen the system due to its ability to enhance network performance without the disruption caused by extensive infrastructure schemes.

“By leveraging its advanced adaptive control technology, the authority will be able to optimise traffic flow and enhance the local environment, making walking and cycling easier and safer, all in line with its active travel policies.”

Representing the next generation of adaptive traffic control, FUSION enables all modes of transport to be modelled and optimised.  The system is also easy to operate and reconfigure, enabling traffic managers to effectively manage and balance the often-competing demands of cars, HGVs, buses, taxis, pedestrians and cyclists.
